Sleep problems
B12 appears to be essential to the body's ability to formulate melatonin, an amino acid that regulates the body's biological clock, supporting us to sleep and wake in appropriate cycles. In a study, 20 healthy subjects received methylcobalamin or cyanocobalamin daily for two weeks and were evaluated before and after treatment for feelings of alertness, concentration, and general well-being. Only the methylcobalamin group reported improvements in sleep quality, concentration, and feeling "refreshed" after sleep. Several case studies have reported lasting alleviation of sleep problems, such as inability to get to sleep followed by difficulty waking up after taking high doses of B12, even for short periods of time. Neuropathy In a randomized, double-blind study, 50 patients with diabetic neuropathy received either 1500 mcg of B12 or placebo daily for four months. By the end of the study, those receiving B12 reported significant lessening of all symptoms of neuropathy. In another study, 20 patients with well controlled diabetes took 1500 mcg of B12 daily for two months. At the beginning of the study, their blood levels of B12 were low and they were displaying early signs of neuropathy. By the end of the study, their blood levels of B12 were close to normal and signs of neuropathy had abated significantly.
