Immune System Booster: Protection from Colds and Flu
No one is immune from winter colds and flu - but it is possible to boost the immune system, and so reduce the chances of getting sick. NAC (N-acetylcysteine) is a naturally occurring substance that boosts the immune system and offers significant protection against winter colds and flu. A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial showed that taking NAC during the cold and flu season significantly reduces both the frequency and severity of the flu. It was found that although many of the participants were exposed to flu infections, only 25% of those who were taking NAC developed symptoms. In contrast, 79% of the participants receiving the placebo who had been infected with the flu developed symptoms. Thus, those who were not protected by NAC were more than 3 times as likely to develop symptoms if exposed to contagion. It is clear from this that NAC can dramatically decrease the average person's chances of getting sick at any time. This is even more significant during the cold and flu season. Reducing the Symptoms of Colds and Flu, and Protecting the Lungs For those who do contract a cold or the flu, NAC has the ability to dramatically decrease the severity of the illness. Research indicates this is because NAC acts as a precursor to glutathione, enabling people to rebuild their levels of glutathione in various parts of the body, including the lungs. glutathione is manufactured inside our cells, and is an important component of our defence system. In fact, it is frequently referred to as the "master antioxidant." In particular, our lungs need a lot of glutathione, and use it to create a protective layer. The fact that NAC is a precursor to glutathione appears to account for its proven ability to help in dealing with respiratory illnesses. Help for People with Chronic Problems into the effects of NAC on people with chronic respiratory illnesses, such as chronic bronchitis. Researchers have conclusively demonstrated that NAC can significantly decrease flare-ups and symptoms of chronic bronchitis. Two reviews of a large number of controlled, multi-site, clinical trials - involving some 2,500 people - have confirmed this. The first of these was a meta-analysis of 9 double blind, placebo-controlled clinical trials carried out over a period of 15 years. These trials showed that patients with chronic bronchitis taking courses of oral NAC experienced an average of a 23% decrease in flare-ups of their illness. The results were so impressive that researchers speculated that morbidity could be decreased with a prolonged course of NAC. A second review of randomized, controlled clinical trials confirmed that NAC is associated with a decrease in flare-ups of chronic bronchitis, and reduces symptoms. Suggested Use: Take 1 capsule 3 times daily.
