Manganese functions in many enzyme systems including enzymes involved in blood sugar control, energy metabolism, and thyroid hormone function. Manganese is needed for healthy skin, bone and cartilage, and it helps to activate superoxide dismutase (SOD), an important antioxidant enzyme.
