MSM
MSM plays an essential role in the body. Among its many functions, MSM helps form connective tissues, maintains the structure of proteins and keratin (an essential component in hair and nail growth), aids in producing immunoglobulin (which maintains the immune system), and catalyzes the chemical reactions that convert food into energy. First discovered in the late 1970s, MSM is a metabolite of DMSO (Dimethyl sulfoxide.) When DMSO enters the body, approximately 15 percent of it breaks down into DMSO 2 (dimethyl sulfone) also known as MSM. While much is unknown about the mechanisms responsible for MSM’s action in the body, it has been widely used by veterinarians to treat inflammatory conditions including bone and muscle disorders, and performs equally well in humans, according to preliminary research. During many years of clinical use at Oregon Health Sciences University in Portland, researchers have documented a number of effects in case reports on hundreds of patients treated orally with more than two grams of MSM daily, including: Inhibition of pain impulses along nerve fibers (analgesia) Decreased inflammation Increased blood supply Reduction of muscle spasm Softening of scar tissue Further study has indicated MSM can significantly reduce symptoms of degenerative arthritis in comparison to 2,400 mg. of Motrin. Eighty-two percent of participants receiving MSM in a double-blinded study reported better pain control within six weeks of starting treatment, while only 18 percent of participants receiving Motrin showed improvement. A follow-up pilot study examining MSM’s potential effects in athletic injuries involving muscles, tendons and ligaments again showed a faster reduction of symptoms than placebo. In this case, both patients receiving MSM and those receiving placebo were also given electromuscular stimulation and chiropractic treatment. Participants using MSM recovered much more quickly, and used 40 percent less physical therapy and chiropractic services. Boswellia serrata Long known for its anti-inflammatory properties in the ancient Ayurvedic healing traditions of India, Boswellia serrata, a gummy tree resin, is now being used in modern phytomedical preparations. Boswellia resin has traditionally been recommended for rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, and cervical spondylitis. Today, a purified extract is used in India to treat rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, soft tissue rheumatism, and fibromyositis. Boswellia is a unique, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory, based on both pharmacological and clinical studies. Boswellic acids, which are used as marker compounds in standardized preparations, are thought to be responsible for this activity by interfering with leukotriene biosynthesis. Leukotrienes are believed to mediate inflammation, and play a role in allergic reactions. Studies and clinical reports in India and more recent clinical trials in Germany have confirmed that standardized extract of Boswellia is an effective treatment for rheumatoid arthritis in adults and children. Participants in most of these studies previously had poor - or no response to standard therapies such as NSAIDs or gold. Suggested Use: Take 2 capsules 3 times daily.
