Main reason for use
To provide nutritional support for eye health and to help prevent macular degeneration. A carotenoid from the marigold flower, lutein is highly concentrated in the eye. Lutein works by protecting the blood vessels that supply the retina, replenishing the lutein pigment that occurs naturally in the macula (the central part of the retina), and filtering out the blue light in the atmosphere that causes free-radical damage to the eye. Numerous pilot studies of lutein supplementation on participants with eye diseases such as AMD (Age-related Macular Degeneration) have suggested that it can improve several markers of vision impairment. One large study, the Veterans’ Lutein Antioxidant Supplementation Trial (LAST), showed lutein supplements alone or with other antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals to be useful in slowing or improving symptoms of AMD. Another important study, the Age-Related Eye Disease Study (AREDS) showed antioxidant supplements in general to be important in slowing AMD. Although it did not include lutein, there is enough research available that lutein is being included in new phases of the AREDS. Suggested Use: Take one softgel daily.
