L-Lysine is essential. It is a factor in immune system function. Two amino acids play critical roles in Herpes Simplex I: L-arginine and L-lysine.
Unlike other viruses, such as those that cause colds and flu, the Herpes virus stays in the body after initial infection and “hides” to avoid detection by the healthy immune system. But when the body is under stress—whether it is caused by illness, fatigue, overwork, intense exercise, or emotional problems—the immune system is weakened. At these times, the Herpes virus comes out of hiding, enters its target cells, and begins to replicate. Cold sores are the blisters that form when the virus invades cells and begins to replicate. L-arginine supports replication while L-Lysine counteracts it. The balance can be tipped by taking supplementary L-Lysine, which inhibits absorption of L-arginine. With less available L-arginine, Herpes outbreaks occur less often, and when they do occur they are less severe and shorter in duration. Two capsules three times daily
