Ester-C Vitamin C in its most common form—ascorbic acid—can cause gassiness, bloating, and diarrhea. Many adults can’t tolerate this, and children and teens are even less likely to do so. Ester-C is a specially processed form of calcium ascorbate, which is less likely to cause gastric discomfort. In a study, 50 volunteers received 1000 mg per day of either Ester-C or ascorbic acid for three days, and then switched for three days. Thirty percent fewer gastric symptoms occurred when participants took Ester-C.
Other studies show that ascorbic acid passes out of the body quickly in urine, so little of it is absorbed. One study showed that 24 hours after supplementation with Ester-C®, the white blood cells of subjects who had taken Ester-C® had absorbed more Vitamin C than those of subjects who had taken regular ascorbic acid.
