Electrolytes
Important electrolytes include potassium, sodium, chloride, and magnesium. Sweating, exercise duration/intensity and temperature can increase electrolyte loss. Electrolyte loss due to exercise lasting more than four hours can impair heat tolerance, reduce performance, and induce cramps, exhaustion, and heat stroke. Moreover, complete re-hydration cannot occur without electrolyte replacement. Carbohydrates Our bodies convert carbohydrates to glycogen, which is stored until it is needed to fuel energy. Strenuous exercise significantly depletes glycogen and can result in fatigue and injury. Complete replenishment of glycogen generally takes 24 to 48 hours, but this can be lessened by consuming carbohydrates immediately after an intense workout, preferably in liquid form, which can be absorbed quickly. Vitamins C and E Strenuous physical activity depletes antioxidants, increasing oxidative stress. Hydrade® contains the antioxidant Vitamins C and E. The Vitamin C in Hydrade is Ester-C, which is highly bioavailable and easy to digest. B Vitamins Exercise depletes B vitamins, which perform many functions, such as supporting carbohydrate, protein, and fat metabolism. As well, 100 mg of thiamine daily may alleviate or prevent exercise-induced fatigue. Hydrade® contains thiamine (B1), riboflavin (B2), niacin (B3), pantothenic acid (B5), pyridoxine (B6), cyanocobalamin (B12), and folic acid. Trace Minerals Trace minerals help convert carbohydrate, fat, and protein into energy. Chromium supports balanced blood glucose, which helps control weight and energy. North Americans tend to be deficient in chromium; this is especially true of athletes. Other Important Points about SISU Hydrade • Sports drinks are most beneficial when consumed throughout exercise to help maintain blood glucose levels. This becomes more important when exertion continues for more than one hour. • The rules of some athletic events and the nature of some activities limit fluid consumption.
