Glucosamine
It was once believed that glucosamine had no anti-inflammatory effects, but recent research suggests that it works both by fighting inflammation and inhibiting cartilage degeneration. A meta-analysis (overview) of 20 studies encompassing a total of 2570 patients suggested that daily glucosamine supplements could reduce pain by 28 percent and improve function by 21 percent. Glucosamine proved to be as good as, or better than, NSAIDS in controlling pain, without risk of adverse effects. It is not clear whether glucosamine can actually rebuild cartilage, but several studies have shown that it can slow progression of the disease of a course of three years. One study showed that it reduced OA-related knee surgeries by 50 percent over five years, even after treatment had stopped. Shark cartilage Shark cartilage is rich in chondroitin sulfate, which is naturally present in cartilage. Some studies suggest that chondroitin protects cartilage enough that people may be able to reduce drug dosages. However, most research suggests that combining glucosamine and chondroitin can optimize their effectiveness. In the Glucosamine/chondroitin Arthritis Intervention Trial (GAIT), 1600 patients with knee OA received a) glucosamine, b) chondroitin, c) glucosamine and chondroitin, d) the arthritis drug celecoxib, or e) placebo daily. After 24 weeks, patients with moderate to severe pain on glucosamine and chondroitin experienced significant reduction in knee pain. Only celecoxib was more effective, but exposed patients to risk of adverse effects. A one-year, placebo-controlled study of 120 patients with knee OA showed that glucosamine and chondroitin could slow progression of the disease. Other Important Points about SISU Glucosamine Sulfate • It takes up to four weeks for glucosamine to begin taking effect, but the longer it is used, the more pronounced the benefit may be. • Individuals with allergies to sulphur drugs or preservatives can use glucosamine sulfate, as it occurs naturally in the human body and does not cause allergic reactions. • Research has shown glucosamine sulfate to be as effective as another often-recommended form of glucosamine (hydrochloride). • If you have early-stage arthritis causing mild to moderate pain, or are at risk of developing arthritis, you may want to begin with SISU Glucosamine Sulfate. If you do not begin to feel better within four weeks, try Glucosamine Sulfate Plus or, for a higher dose of chondroitin, Glucosamine and Chondrotin.
