Heart Health
The active ingredients in Ginkgo biloba extract (GBE) have several properties that may contribute to improved blood flow. The flavonoids in GBE are potent antioxidants, which scavenge free radicals and reduce oxidation that can contribute to the narrowing of arteries that nourish the brain with blood. This narrowing, called atherosclerosis, can diminish blood flow. GBE also inhibits the activity of platelet activating factor (PAF). PAF aids in blood clotting. In the worst-case scenario, narrowed blood vessels combined with blood clots can cause stroke; but in less drastic cases, it can simply impede blood flow. Memory Lessened blood flow to the brain can impair memory and may contribute to depression, tinnitus, and other disruptions of normal brain function. Improved blood flow may help to prevent such impairments and may support the brain’s repair capacity after minor impairments have occurred. In one recent study, 61 participants showed significantly improved speed of information processing after 30 days of Ginkgo. A 14-week study of 256 volunteers showed an average improvement of 7.5 percent in various aspects of memory. While these and many other studies have involved healthy subjects, numerous other studies have shown Ginkgo biloba to significantly lessen symptoms of dementia in elderly patients. Other Advantages Ginkgo improves blood flow and acts as an antioxidant in all parts of the body. In the eyes, it has been demonstrated to provide support against a range of visual ailments such as diabetic retinopathy and age- related macular degeneration. It has also been shown to alleviate symptoms of intermittent claudication, a condition in which blood flow to the hands, legs, and feet is restricted causing severe cramping, and a similar condition known as Raynaud’s disease. There has also been preliminary evidence suggesting that it may be helpful to post-menopausal women suffering from mood problems.
