Silicon is one of the most abundant minerals on Earth. It is part of rocks such as granite and quartz and is found in sand and clay. Although silicon is abundant in nature and can be found in soil-grown foods, it is not in a form that is easily absorbed and used by the body. Combined with today’s highly refined diet, which further diminishes our silicon intake, it is not surprising that some of us may find ourselves with brittle nails, weak, dry hair and aging, lacklustre skin.

Skin, Hair and Nails
Silicon is a key ingredient of structural molecules. These are the building blocks in the body for skin, hair, nails and collagen. A deficiency of silicon in the body causes our collagen to weaken and our hair, skin and nails are the first to show symptoms. Silicon is instrumental in activating the hydroxylation enzymes for cross-linking collagen, improving the strength and elasticity of this fibrous protein. Enhancing the silicon content of collagen leads to improved skin, with more elasticity and fewer wrinkles.

Likewise for hair and nails. The outer shaft of the hair is rich in silicon and one of the three main minerals in nails is silicon. An early sign of silicon deficiency is often brittle hair and nails. Supplementing with BioSil can show improvement in as little as a few weeks. Hair with higher silicon content will grow thicker and stronger, have more shine and lustre, and fall out less. Nails will be less brittle and grow stronger.

Bones and Joints
Similarly, silicon is important to the maintenance and growth of bones and joints. Studies have shown that it is essential for increasing levels of collagen, benefiting calcium absorption and increasing flexibility of the bones (reducing fractures). Bone health depends on silicon. It is one of the minerals required for the process of bone calcification.

Joints also benefit from silicon supplementation. Silicon is essential as a cross-linking agent for hydrating the joints. This promotes connective tissue elasticity and cushioning.

Arteries and Veins
Clinical studies show that as we age the silicon levels in our artery walls decreases. In fact, by the time we are seniors we only have 15 percent of the silicon in our aorta as that of a child. Silicon makes the inner lining of arterial tissue (tunica intima) less permeable, thus reducing the risk for plaque formation that eventually leads to obstructed arteries. This leads some researchers to believe that silicon deficiency may predispose some of us for certain types of heart disease.

Silicon and Aluminum Toxicity
Aluminum is a trace mineral that is very dangerous, sometimes fatal, if excessive amounts are absorbed. Aluminum is found in plant and animal foods, antacids, foil, deodorants and baking powder, just to name a few. Studies have shown that silicon supplements can prevent increases in aluminum concentration in the brain by reducing the absorption of this toxic mineral.

Suggested Usage: 6 to 10 drops per day in juice and drink immediately or as directed by a health practitioner.
